Terrible Images of In-Progress Tile Work

I apologize for the quality (or lack of) of the following images.  They are either unfired or bisqued tiles with underglaze printing and painting on them.  They’ll get glaze, more layers, ect later, but this is what happened to them this week.

More coming soon! (for real this time)

Drawings to Scans to Screens to Tiles

Below are a few of the images I’m starting to screenprint onto ceramic tiles this week.  I’m not 100% sure yet where it’s going but I’ll be playing around with layering underglazes and glazes using these line drawings.  They are all drawings I’ve done in pen, then burned to a silk screen.  I am currently printing onto my unfired tiles with underglazes through the screen.  We’ll see how it turns out.  For now though, here is a preview from the drawing stage.

University of Cincinnati New Ceramics Blog!

The UC Ceramics Department finally has a blog! Everyone in the studio can contribute to the blog (Grads, Undergrads, Alum, Instructors).  We are just getting started, but it should be pretty sweet, and have some good information about upcoming art events, new work, residencies, and ceramics-news in general.

Check it out here: We Make Ceramics

Stage 2 Cauliflower Fatty with an Aggressive Skin Disorder

Here is the next sculpture in the series I have been working on.  Not much different from the last one, just larger and more interesting.  After this peice I think I’m going to make one with a net or hay bail wire around it (you can fire that) so that it has a feeling of the flesh being contained.  Also, Stage 1 is in the kiln right now, so pictures of the glaze will be posted soon!

Bisque Fired Small Fatty!

The Stage 1 Cauliflower Fatty came out of the kiln yesterday.  It will get a flesh tone glaze over all of it except the textured areas, where the glaze will be whipped away so the underglaze can show through.

Fatty Animation.

This is unrelated to my work in every way except that the subject matter are my wet clay sculptures.  I was trying to see if I could force PowerPoint to let me animate something.  It kind of works, but because I wasn’t very careful it looks like those Seasame Street shorts where the fruit dances around and makes different numbers/shapes.  You know the ones.

Just watch the fatties dance via super low quality animation okay?

Stage 1 Cauliflower Fatty With A Skin Disorder (Working Title)

After yet another firing failure with the last piece I posted about, I decided to make a mold of the same type of form in order to make multiples.  I was thinking that this would help me overcome the failure rate, which as of late has been 100%.  However, I soon realized that if I had a 3 peice press mold of the form, I could assemble it in any combination I want.

So, the idea now is to create a series of “growing” forms.  Each form will have more rolls and bubbling fat than the last form.

Sorry for the excess of photos, but I thought for the sake of entertainment value, I’d share a picture of what my studio space looks like. I’m officially a crazy hoarder.

You can see on the lower left, under my desk, the ruins of Kevin Gen. 2 (in the back) and the Fat torso sculpture (front).

If anyone lasted through this whole post, thank you.
